Embarking on string of UK gigs fresh from their very first Australian tour, best-selling soul act The Real Thing return to Coventry next weekend with a hotly anticipated show at Coundon's Rialto Reborn. Ahead of the set on Friday 31 March, vocalist Eddie Amoo told fans more about what to expect when the band comes to town.

“We’ll be performing our hits and a host of our other songs – and of course our incredible band help to add some real character and depth to the performance,” he said. “Everyone can expect an evening of boogie, nostalgia and dancing. You’re going to dance your heads off!”

Famed for their soulful love songs, smooth vocals and unforgettable melodies, the group first formed in 1972, with Eddie Amoo joining his brother Chris and bandmate Dave Smith three years later, just before their meteoric rise to fame with singles ‘Can’t Get by Without You’, ‘Can You Feel the Force’ and ‘You to Me Are Everything’.

“I grew up in Toxteth in Liverpool, where our main social point was a ballroom called the Rialto, so when I was looking at the shows list, the Coventry one really stood out to me,” he continued.

More than 40 years later, the trio are still together and touring: last year, they played an amazing 96 shows in just ten months, all backed by their five-piece band. And according to Amoo, at least, there's no sign that they're tiring of it yet.

“You never lose the buzz of playing live, I love it, and we’ve kept our standards high, continuing to develop our show to this day,” he said. “Our show is the opposite of ‘old’, we get the fans on their feet and we are continually re-working the tracks so they always sound fresh and different. We love to perform the hits, they all give the people that electric spark. You can almost see them being elevated back in time but of course Children of the Ghetto is our track, that’s our story.”

Though it's not their first time in the city, next week's gig will be the group's first performance at the Rialto Reborn, part of a series of exciting concerts planned this year under the venue's new management.

The Real Thing are at the Rialto Reborn on Friday 31 March with doors opening at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £25 and are available at rialtoreborn.co.uk.
