When the Regent first opened its doors, it wasn’t a theatre at all but a cinema, presenting its first ever movie, the silent film The Last Command, in 1929. Sixty years later, after a couple of name changes, the venue closed, due in the main to the arrival of a six-screen cinema at nearby Festival Park. Shift forward in time 10 years and the building reopened, this time as the theatre which the Potteries has since come to know and love! The Regent has developed into one of the country’s foremost theatres and now presents a range of opera, dance, drama and musicals, with many productions showing at the venue either prior to or following a West End run.
