The Royal Philharmonic’s reputation as one of the UK’s finest orchestras has been emphatically underlined in recent times, thanks to the arrival as music director of the dynamic Vasily Petrenko (pictured).

The Leningrad (now St Petersburg)-born 48-year-old, who became a British citizen in 2015, has previously been chief conductor of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic (he’s now the RLPO’s conductor laureate), presiding over not only a re-fashioning of its sound but also an impressive increase in concert ticket sales.

Petrenko’s trademark energy is sure to be much in evidence when he picks up the baton at Symphony Hall this month, presenting a concert programme featuring works by Tchaikovsky (Fantasy Overture, Romeo & Juliet) and Prokofiev (Symphony No5). Award-winning American violinist Esther Yoo also contributes to proceedings, playing Bruch’s much-loved Violin Concerto. She previously recorded the piece with Petrenko and the Royal Phil to great critical acclaim.
