The exterior façade of the Library of Birmingham will be lit up on Thursday 21 November to commemorate and support 2 important events: the 50 year memorial of the Birmingham pub bombings and World Pancreatic Cancer Day.

A memorial service will be held at New Street Station, next to the tree memorial, to mark the 50 year memorial of the Birmingham pub bombings.

On 21 November 1974, 2 bombs exploded in pubs in Birmingham, England. The first bomb was detonated in the Mulberry Bush pub. The second bomb exploded in the Tavern in the Town pub.

The explosions killed 21 people and injured 220 others. The bombings occurred during a time of conflict known as "the Troubles".

The Irish Republican Army (IRA) has never formally admitted responsibility, but it is widely believed to be behind the bombings.

Six men, known as the Birmingham Six, were found guilty in 1975, but their convictions were overturned in 1991. A reinvestigation in 2023 concluded that there was insufficient evidence to bring criminal charges.

World Pancreatic Cancer Day is dedicated to raising awareness about pancreatic cancer, honoring those who have been affected and advocating for better survival rates.

People around the world unite to share information about the symptoms and the importance of early detection.
