On the final day of August, the Severn Valley Railway is putting on a mini enthusiast event to mark the fact that has a particularly superb line-up of locomotives in service.

On Saturday 31 August, two visiting steam locomotives, 45596 ‘Bahamas’ and 2999 ‘Lady of Legend’ join the SVR-based, newly overhauled 13268 Stanier Mogul. Diesel traction will be supplied by D821 ‘Greyhound’, which is making its first runs of 2024, following extensive remedial work.

‘We couldn’t resist calling this our Super Saturday,’ said Lewis Maddox, the SVR’s visitor engagement manger, ‘And it’s going to be a great opportunity to see an interesting and somewhat unusual variety of locomotives on the railway. Standard fares apply, and we’re looking forward to rounding off the summer with a splash.’

Also, there’ll be 100th birthday celebrations for GWR 4566. The locomotive is on static display at The Engine House, Highley, and its supporters are raising funds for its overhaul and return to service. On both Saturday 31 August and Sunday 1 September, they’ll be celebrating with a summer fete event around the loco, with competitions, games, a raffle and tombola, and on the Saturday only, a magic show.
