Shrewsbury is the county town of Shropshire, lying on the River Severn, with the town centre located in the loop of the river.  The town is the birthplace of Charles Darwin, where he also studied and grew up.

Shrewsbury is a market town whose centre has a largely unspoilt medieval street plan and over 660 listed buildings, including several examples of timber framing from the 15th and 16th centuries. Some attractions in the town include Shrewsbury Castle (founded in 1074), a red sandstone fortification and Shrewsbury Abbey, a former Benedictine monastery, founded in 1083 by Roger de Montgomery.
