The Belfrey Theatre is home to the long-established Wellington Theatre Company (WTC) and was originally part of the Prince’s Street Infants School. The Belfrey Arts Trust then purchased the property from the local authority for one pound, with Josie Grant, WTC’s ‘guiding light’, eager to find a permanent home for the company. Legend has it that the Belfrey name was taken when Josie said of the project, “I must have bats in my belfry” - although nobody seems to know where the different spelling of Belfrey originated!
