COHORS was commissioned by the Cultural Association 4'33", which took shape thanks to an artistic residency held at the Palazzo Te Foundation in Mantova. The sextet engages in research and arrangement of Renaissance and Baroque pieces through the practice of improvisation, in a virtuosic dialogue between jazz, which constitutes one of its foundational values, and the musical tradition of European Renaissance courts.
The intertwining of seemingly disparate genres, united by the improvisational component, is enhanced by a multidisciplinary approach that includes, in addition to an ensemble of musicians drawing from both traditions, the dancer and choreographer Camilla Monga. Starting from 7 musical pieces originating from some of the most active European courts of the Renaissance, the musicians and the dancer not only work on the reworking of material from these great court composers but also create a true musical journey, alternating between written parts and improvised sections with moments of conduction.
Thanks to the DV Young grant, which the project won, in June 2023 the sextet recorded its debut album for Da Vinci Publishing.
The project has been named the winner of Nuova Generazione Jazz 2024, a program by I-JAzz.
