There will be a buzz around Compton Verney, as it prepares to welcome visitors for half term (30 May to 3 June), with a packed programme for the early summer break.

In partnership with the British Bee Keepers Association, the Ju-Bee-Lee Family Fun Days (Tuesday 31 May to Wednesday 1 June) will offer bee-themed activities celebrating Her Majesty Platinum Jubilee.

Inspired by the Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC), Compton Verney will celebrate the pollinators who help to keep our planet green, with drop-in sessions across two days.

There will be a live, open-air bee demonstration, giving an interactive and sensory hive experience, where you can learn about beekeeping, honey extraction and try your hand at the ancient art of making a skep, a straw beehive. You can also discover how to catch swarms and take part in a fascinating beeswax candle rolling session.

There’s also an opportunity to join members of the grounds team for a wild flower meadow demonstration, including inspirational advice from volunteer expert, Peter Haine, who will show you how to create a successful wildflower meadow in your own garden.

Meanwhile, the BBC Ndevour Moth group will be spending the night at Compton Verney to look for amazing moths. You can meet them from 10am-11.30am on Wednesday 1 June, to see what they found.

Between Thu 2 – Sun 5 June, get your friends and family together for Compton Verney's Picnic in the Park, where you can order a hamper that’s been filled with goodies; including a selection of traditional sandwiches, hand-raised pork pie, quiche, cake, scones, lashings of lemonade and, if you want to push the boat out a little further, there’s a choice of Pimms or prosecco too. Priced from just £34.95 for a two-person picnic.

Meanwhile over in the Old Town Meadow, site of the medieval village of Compton Murdak, Morag Myerscough’s trademark use of eye-popping colour is in full effect with her brand new installation. This new artwork is both a performance arena and an interactive visitor experience, where you can explore what has the look and feel of a vibrantly-hued 2-dimensional village – echoing the first settlement beneath your feet, which dates back to 1099.

Morag’s work also features in Compton Verney's specially-developed app, Go Colour! - a creative tool which enables children to play and experiment online with drawing, whilst exploring the art gallery’s collections and learning about colour. Browse images of selected artworks and objects, analyse them for their colour palettes and then use bespoke palettes to colour in line art, or free-draw using a set of tools such as a pencil, felt tip, spray can and paint brush. You can use the app for free on the Compton Verney website.

Throughout the Half term break, Compton Verney is hosting a number of single-day holiday camps (between 31 May and 1 June, 09:30am – 4:00pm).

The first, Print Makers Camp on 31 May will teach budding designers a range of printing and pattern techniques, using a variety of media. The day starts by exploring Morag Myerscough’s bold and funky designs out in the grounds and investigate the prints and patterns to be found throughout Compton Verney’s remarkable, treasure-filled galleries. Sketching and collecting their own ideas as they go, each participatint will spend time in the art studio, having fun as they create their unique designs. The camp also includes stamp carving and producing a lino-cut print.

Re-Fashion Makers Camp on 1 June will give your little Coco Chanel or Ralph Lauren an experience like no other. Here, they’ll be guided through the fashion design process by costume designer Libby, while trying out a variety of techniques to create a sensational new look with the message of Refashion, Reuse, Re-love!

From creating storyboards to illustrations, being given professional tips on upcycling clothes and making something truly fabulous with just a few accessories, this activity is perfect fo fashion obsessed little ones.
