More than 20,500 fans came out this week to see Sarina Wiegman’s side continue their preparations for UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 in a highly competitive friendly.
Thousands visited the stadium’s fan village, which featured a live DJ, food, drink and a range of activities for fans to take part in, including penalty shootout games and more.
Fans also took part in a pre-match light show which saw them use their phones to light up Coventry Building Society Arena for the Lionesses.
England and South Africa lined up with a firework display before the Lionesses kicked-off.
Leah Williamsom opened the scoring in the 12th minute on her 50th cap with a calm and composed finish.
Chloe Kelly and Maya Le Tissier combined down the right wing as England sought to push their advantage. Le Tissier’s cross was met with a header by Grace Clinton who doubled England’s lead to make it 2-0.
South Africa pulled a goal back in the second half with superb finish from Thembi Kgatalana past Mary Earps in goal.
The Banyana Banyana pushed England throughout the second half and threatened on the break, but the Lionesses dominated possession and ran out 2-1 winners.
The fixture built on a proud heritage of major national and international sport at Coventry Building Society Arena.
Paul Michael, Managing Director of Coventry Building Society Arena, said it was fantastic to welcome back elite international sport to the stadium.
“It was another night to remember at Coventry Building Society Arena as we welcomed the Lionesses back for a second time in two years,” he said.
“The stadium transformed into a festival of football, with fans arriving early to enjoy the fan zone and the night kicking off with an incredible stadium bowl light show.
“England’s performance on the pitch was a match for the great atmosphere on what was a memorable night at the venue.
“We are committed to working with our partners across Coventry to bring more elite sport to the city and creating more brilliant nights like this.”
