The 2024/25 Leamington Music Winter Season resumes on Friday 24 January with a concert from the Coull Quartet in the Royal Pump Rooms in Leamington at 7.30pm.

Formed in 1974 by students at the Royal Academy of Music under the guidance of renowned quartet leader, Sidney Griller, the Coull Quartet rapidly achieved national recognition and celebrated their 50th anniversary last year.

The Coull were appointed Quartet-in-Residence at the University of Warwick in 1977, a post they held for over forty years. The Quartet, which includes two of its founder members, has performed and broadcast extensively throughout the UK, and has made tours of Western Europe, the Americas, Australia, China, India and the Far East.

Mozart makes a welcome appearance in this year’s Season here, appropriately with his String Quartet No. 14 in G major, K387 ‘Spring’; Prokofiev’s String Quartet No. 1 in B minor, Op. 50 is a much-anticipated rarity in Leamington Music's programming, and Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 8 in E minor, Op. 59 No. 2, ‘Rasumovsky’ is an evergreen must-hear in a concert like this one.

Leamington Music’s Artistic Director, Helen Beecroft, adds: “We are incredibly lucky to have a string quartet of such extraordinary calibre on our doorstep here in Warwick District, and Leamington Music is delighted to be part of the anniversary celebrations as the first concert of the next 50 years for this very special ensemble.”

The Leamington Music Winter Season runs until mid-March and has twenty-one events in all, having begun in September with an exhilarating six concerts from the Brodsky Quartet, performing all fifteen Quartets by Shostakovich. The season goes on with bi-monthly concerts of string quartets, early music, choral music, Indian Carnatic music, and a special Family Concert; and also features works by black composers, women composers, and living composers for some new discoveries alongside familiar favourites to ensure there is something for everyone.
