The Canal & River Trust has announced the return of the Smethwick Luminaire beneath the Grade I-listed Galton Bridge on Saturday 9 November 2024.
This year's free event will feature the revival of the Festival of Lights in Smethwick, a dazzling visual display celebrating Diwali, thanks to the support of local community groups and partners.
The light projections will once again transform the iconic cast-iron Galton Bridge, cared for by the charity, into a stunning canvas. Reputedly the highest single span bridge in the world at the time it was built in 1829, spanning the Birmingham Mainline Canal 21 metres up in the air, floodlights will be positioned on the canal towpath to create a cinematic display that will bounce off the bridge and surface of the water.
Originally conceived as an alternative to fireworks, the event offers an inclusive, eco-friendly way to celebrate without noise, pollution, or firework litter. The event has been scheduled a little later, in November, to minimise potential disruption to local bat populations along the canal, whose activity decreases with colder weather.
The celebration is being organised as part of the Canal & River Trust's community initiative, thanks to funds raised by players of People's Postcode Lottery. The programme uses activities on and beside the water to help attract people to the canal and improve health and wellbeing.
"Reviving the Luminaire adds a special touch to this year's festivities," said Lutfur Rahman fromthe Canal & River Trust.
"Thanks to the funds we're received, we're delighted to be able to light up the bridge and bring the community together for a vibrant night of cultural celebration. As a charity we're really grateful to the sponsors and community partners that have made the event possible, and we can't wait to welcome local people along."
Key partners also supporting the event include community groups the Echo Sikhs and the Guru Nanak Gurdwara Smethwick, who will be volunteering on the day. Sandwell College has also offered additional support, making the event a truly collaborative effort.
The Smethwick Luminaire takes place on Saturday 9 November 2024 from 5pm - 8pm at Galton Bridge, Smethwick, with free admission.
The Canal & River Trust are seeking more volunteers to join, and to help make events like this a success. Whether it's helping with setup, guiding visitors, or ensuring a smooth operation on the day, or volunteering along the canals, your support can make a difference.
