Young Driver is the UK’s largest pre-17 driving scheme, with 70 venues across the UK, including several in its heartland, the Midlands. Children as young as 10 can learn to drive in dual control cars, with government approved instructors. A road system is created on private property, with traffic signs, roundabouts and junctions, along with special areas to practice manoeuvres such as steering control and parking.
Pupils learn to brake, steer, change gear, tackle roundabouts and traffic lights, and even parallel park – which is great fun but it’s also helping them become a safer driver. Research shows those who start learning pre-17 are significantly less likely to have an accident when they do go on to pass their test and it gives them a great head start for when they start learning on-the-road. Over 1.4 million lessons have been given since the scheme launched in 2009.
The emphasis of the lessons is on encouraging youngsters to consider how to drive responsibly, giving them time to perfect driving skills without the pressures of public roads. Shockingly, one in five newly qualified drivers crashes within six months of passing their test. But for those who have taken a Young Driver course, the rate of accidents in that worrying first six months drops dramatically, to fewer than four per cent – a reduction of more than 80 per cent.
