Across the summer holiday period, the Severn Valley Railway is adding an extra morning shuttle service from Bridgnorth to Highley.

The additional service will leave Bridgnorth at 10.30am, stopping at Hampton Loade then Highley, the home of The Engine House Visitor Centre, on Saturdays only from 22 July to 2 September.

The SVR’s managing director Jonathan ‘Gus’ Dunster said: “The additional train will enable passengers to be ‘out’ on the line earlier in the day, if starting their day at Bridgnorth, and so enhance their experience while they are with us. It will run on Saturdays only because this is our busiest day of the week, and we are expecting higher numbers during the peak summer season.”

The Railway is all set to welcome summer visitors on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, and there’s a science theme to many of the extra activities it has planned. There are interactive exhibits, fun workshops and a host of themed weekend attractions throughout the six weeks of the holiday period.

“We’ve got lots of fizzing and whizzing activities lined up,” explained visitor engagement manager Lewis Maddox. “Sublime Science are running four sessions every day at The Engine House, Highley and kids will be delighted to learn that slime making is on the curriculum! TrainTime UK are bringing the biggest toy train set you’ll ever see for youngsters to help build, and there’s nine-hole crazy golf available on selected dates.

“Our full-line tickets for families start from £50, and include a free return visit when Freedom-of-the-Line tickets are booked, meaning two fun-packed SVR visits this summer for the price of one.”

The extra weekend activities include:

  • 29 July - Day of Dance across the railway
  • 29 & 30 July - Live steam model railway at Kidderminster station
  • 6 August - Supercar gathering at Bridgnorth station
  • 12 & 13 August - Vintage Transport Extravaganza
  • 19 & 20 August - Food and Craft Fayre, Engine House, Highley
