With the end of the summer looming and a new school term on the horizon, we've selected some of the top events and activities to enjoy this forthcoming bank holiday weekend. 

ALICE'S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND FAMILY DAY | THE COMMANDERY, WORCESTER | MONDAY 28 AUGUST

Head down the rabbit hole with Alice, the white rabbit and the Queen of Hearts in Worcester’s Wonderland at The Commandery.

Families can play flamingo croquet, make their own Mad Hatter hat, decorate “eat me” biscuits and more.

Children can let off steam in the walled gardens, explore the outdoor nature play area and search the nooks and crannies of the museum to find all the Card Soldiers for the Queen of Hearts.


ROAR & EXPLORE | WEST MIDLAND SAFARI & LEISURE PARK, BEWDLEY | UNTIL THURSDAY 31 AUGUST

Visit the Safari Park throughout August and celebrate the official opening of its brand-new walk-through attraction, Lion Ridge. 

Lion Ridge will give guests the chance to see the park's bachelor pride on foot for the first time in the park’s 50-year history.

Families will be able to take part in a whole host of lion-themed activities, as well as being able to learn about lions and their threats in the wild at the Conservation Station.


SUMMER OF SCIENCE | SEVERN VALLEY RAILWAY | UNTIL SUNDAY 3 SEPTEMBER

Alongside its steam and heritage diesel train services, Severn Valley Railway (SVR) is this summer hosting a number of interactive exhibits and workshops, in the process aiming to get young visitors interested in the world of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics).

Summer-fun highlights include daily shows from Sublime Science, SVR regulars TrainTime UK making a welcome return with their giant trainset, and a back-by-popular-demand nine-hole ‘crazy golf’ course.

MEDIEVAL LIFE WITH THE BUCKINGHAM'S RETINUE | AVONCROFT MUSEUM, BROMSGROVE | SUNDAY 27 & MONDAY 28 AUGUST

Buckingham’s Retinue will bring to life the late medieval period displaying an encampment with music and dance, craft displays, surgeon’s talks, cookery demonstrations, and more.

The arms and armour of the medieval period will be displayed throughout the day, with the opportunity to get hands on with accurate reproduction weapons and armour too. These will all be brought alive with archery and cannon demonstrations.

There will be a display of medieval music and dance with an explanation of their status, background and how they reflect medieval life. The audience will be provided with the opportunity to participate with easy to learn and highly enjoyable medieval dances.


SUMMER OF PLAY | CROOME, WORCESTER | UNTIL SUNDAY 3 SEPTEMBER

With new play equipment and a jam-packed programme of activities, kids can explore every side of their personality as well as discover historical buildings, wild walks, meadows, café’s and plenty of picnic spots too at Croome's Summer of Play.

Free Summer of Play activities and events (normal admission applies) include nature play in a giant birds nest, performance play on the festival inspired stage, energetic play with games on the South Lawn, messy play with mud kitchens and a yoga space at the Rotunda.

Plus get crafting with self-led paper crafts in the Activity Room including nature origami, Summer of Play colouring and make your own cloud gazer, then relax in the reading nook with a selection of books.


WORCESTER FESTIVAL | VENUES ACROSS WORCESTER | UNTIL MONDAY 28 AUGUST

This year’s Worcester Festival comes to an end this Bank Holiday Weekend, so why not enjoy a number of free family events.

Lots of local organisations are also involved including, Worcester Cathedral, The Commandery, Pershore Plum Festival, Worcester City Art Gallery and Museum, Tudor House Museum, The Worcester Show, The Fold, National Trust Properties: Croome, Greyfriars and The Firs, Museum of Royal Worcester, St Martins Church, The Hive and more.


KNIGHTS AND PRINCESS SCHOOL | EASTNOR CASTLE | SUNDAY 27 - THURSDAY 31 AUGUST

Little ones can join in some medieval mayhem with sword-training games (foam swords) and Medieval princess shows with this special event.

Plus the Woodvilles Household will be at Eastnor with their War of the Roses Medieval Living History Re-enactment Camp on Sunday 27 and Monday 28 August. Guests can enjoy interactive fun throughout the day on the Valley Lawn with shows, cooking, crafts, archery and combat displays.


THE SNAIL AND THE WHALE | THE SWAN THEATRE, WORCESTER | FRIDAY 25 & SATURDAY 26 AUGUST

Following on from versions of The Gruffalo and Room On The Broom, highly rated ensemble Tall Stories here present a show for children aged four and older that blends imaginative storytelling, live music and plenty of humour. 

When a tiny snail who longs to see the world hitches a lift on the tail of a humpback whale, she finds herself embroiled in an exciting adventure - particularly when the whale unexpectedly gets beached... 
The show runs without an interval and for just short of an hour.


HEREFORD RIVER CARNIVAL | ACROSS HEREFORD | FRIDAY 25 & SATURDAY 26 AUGUST

This August bank holiday Hereford’s largest, free community event returns with a splash promising more fun, feel-good vibes and entertainment than ever before.

Castle Green, Bishops Meadow, King George V Playing Fields and all along the riverbank will be bubbling with excitement.

The event will launch at dusk on Friday 25 August with a live performance along and on the river.  Saturday is carnival day and will be ‘a day at the seaside’ at "Hereford-on-Sea". The legendary carnival procession will flood the streets with people and bring everyone to the river to watch the river procession.

Alongside the well-loved highlights like the fun fair, indie food village, craft workshops, traditional games, festival of sport and music stages there will be many new areas & activities across the site.


MALVERNS CLASSIC | EASTNOR CASTLE DEER PARK | THURSDAY 24 - SUNDAY 27 AUGUST

The GT Bicycles Malverns Classic is the Glastonbury of mountain biking and the UK's Biggest Mountain Bike Festival.

Prepare for the biggest party in British mountain biking with a packed weekend for both spectators and riders with challenging and exciting events including flat-out racing across all disciplines for riders of all ages.

The Malverns has the UK's largest Trade/Expo/Demo with close to 100 of brands on display. Live entertainment with live bands and DJ's, free fun fair rides and more.
