Crowne Plaza Birmingham City Centre, an IHG hotel and a prominent landmark for six decades, has announced the completion of its £8 million refurbishment.

The ambitious project to update all 312 guest rooms began in February 2024 and concluded in December 2024, enhancing the hotel’s position as a leading destination for business and leisure travellers in the heart of the city.

The refurbishment includes a choice of standard and deluxe accommodation alongside exclusive club rooms and two suites. Additionally, accessibility options have been upgraded with two fully accessible wet rooms, ensuring an inclusive and welcoming experience for all guests.

This final phase of the refurbishment follows the successful transformation of its ground floor lobby and bar areas in the autumn of 2022. Together, these updates underscore the hotel’s commitment to maintaining its status as a city landmark while staying attuned to the preferences of today’s travellers.

Siobhan Thomasson, General Manager of Crowne Plaza Birmingham City Centre, said: “After listening to our guests and their feedback we’ve created rooms that are not only stylish and comfortable but also highly functional.

“With more sockets, digital cable ports, enhanced desk space and stylish colour palettes, our new Crowne Plaza Worklife bedrooms boast a modern, contemporary feel.

“Our thanks go to hotel refurbishment specialists County Contractors for their work on Crowne Plaza Birmingham City Centre as guest feedback for the new rooms has been fantastic.”

The hotel has been a distinctive feature of the city’s skyline since it first opened its doors in Holliday Street in the 1960s. Over the decades, it has witnessed Birmingham’s transformation into a dynamic and thriving hub with its rich industrial heritage, world-class culture, retail, commerce and connectivity seeing it emerge as one of the UK’s most exciting destinations.

The revitalisation of Crowne Plaza Birmingham City Centre reflects this evolution with its strategic location just minutes New Street station, and the ICC, Symphony Hall and Bullring all on its doorstep. The newly refurbished rooms now align seamlessly with Birmingham’s reputation as a modern, forward-thinking city.

Throughout the work on the hotel, Crowne Plaza Birmingham City Centre has demonstrated a strong commitment to sustainability, recently receiving the prestigious Green Key award in recognition of its environmentally responsible practices. As part of its efforts, it continues its Linen Donation Scheme, which supports the community while significantly reducing waste.

Through this initiative, more than 1,500 pillows, along with hundreds of duvets, mattress toppers, and mattress protectors, have been donated to those in need. Many of these items were donated to Feedo Needo, a charity dedicated to supporting homeless individuals across Birmingham. Contributions were also extended to Birmingham City Foundation, which works to improve the lives of people in the local area.

Siobhan Thomasson added: “Our investment in this refurbishment mirrors Birmingham’s own growth and ambition, and is a fitting representation of the city’s progress, reflecting the innovative and welcoming spirit of the place we call home.

“At the same time, sustainability is a core part of who we are, and we’re committed to making a positive impact. These efforts not only reduce waste but also support some of the city’s most vulnerable residents. We’re proud to provide guests with a space that blends style, functionality and sustainability, offering an experience that truly reflects the vibrancy and diversity of Birmingham.”
