Birmingham Rep has announced it is to produce Little Amal's first-ever visit to Birmingham city centre on Thursday 23 June.
Amal's Birmingham visit will form part of her New Steps, New Friends tour marking World Refugee Week which runs from 19 to 27 June.
Supported by Birmingham City Council, and in partnership with Active Arts, the free event will see the 3.5 metre puppet of a 10-year-old Syrian girl refugee walk a route through the city centre, meeting with different families made up of relatives, friends and community groups. Each of the 'families' will pose for a special portrait within a giant moveable photoframe, welcoming Amal into their unique group photographs. The theatre installation will celebrate the city's diverse population and introduce Amal to everything 'Brummie'.
Since her initial 8,000km journey from Syria, Little Amal has become internationally recognised as a symbol of human rights, representing the millions of refugee children who have been separated from their families.
The exact route and timings of Amal's Birmingham visit are yet to be confirmed. For further information, visit birmingham-rep.co.uk.
