People living with dementia in Coventry and their carers now have a chance to enjoy the therapeutic, social and cognitive benefits of music, thanks to a new Memory Singers group opening in the area.

Coventry Memory Singers begins on Thursday 10 April at Bond’s Hospital, Coventry, and is open to anyone with dementia or other neurological condition, and their carers.

Run by the renowned choir and music charity Armonico Consort, based in Warwick, this is the third Memory Singers group to be established, with others in Solihull and Warwick.

Armonico’s specially-trained professional musicians lead a fun and friendly session that includes warm-ups, activity songs and a wide variety of familiar tunes, with live musical accompaniment. There’s also a chance to socialise over refreshments.

Significant scientific research and inspirational TV documentaries such as Line of Duty actress Vicky McClure’s ‘Our Dementia Choir’, have highlighted the positive effects of music as ‘medicine’. These  extend to unlocking memories, re-establishing cognitive pathways, improving confidence and positively affecting mood.

Sarah Riddell, Operations Manager, Armonico Consort, said: “Singing for people living with dementia is such a joyous and liberating experience, and a much-needed chance for loved ones to connect.  Participants at our existing Memory Singers tell us it’s the highlight of their week, and we’re delighted to be launching our third group at Bond’s Hospital, Coventry.”

As well as being keen to hear from potential participants, Armonico are also on the lookout for volunteers to lend a hand during the sessions.

Coventry Memory Singers launches on Thursday 10 April 2025 at Bond’s Hospital, Hill Road, Coventry CV1 4AX, with subsequent sessions on Thursdays 1st & 15th May, 12th & 19th June, 3rd & 17th July.
